Poem: In My Puffy Parka

We were watching MTV on my sister’s pink television

I sat hunched-back, as usual, at the foot of the bed

I was wearing a puffy gray and white parka-

Way before they were cool and all the rage

My brother’s friend had a pathetic excuse for a beard-

It grew in spots where pus-filled, blistering acne missed

It felt scruffy against my cheek

I scooted to my left and grimaced

this can’t be right

Twelve and too sweet to kick his ass

get away from me

I managed to shrug

His delinquent hand off my shoulder

I kept sitting hunched-back, as usual, at the foot of the bed

I was wearing a puffy gray and white parka

I had kept my cool then, but today I’m enraged
